I had discovered a very useful procedure that I taught my low back patients when they first started care...to give them something safe and effective to do to relieve their pain and to "straighten" the back.

This technique is useful right away, not in days or weeks when the pain is less and you can start *regular* exercises again.

How does this work?

I am going to focus on two main parts of the low back, the joints and the muscles. The joints of the lowback are of two kinds... a disc plus 2 "facet" joints that are fluid filled and cartilage lined so they glide.

Each spinal level has this one disc/two facet joints as a kind of "three-legged stool" which bears your weight equally on all legs. When the stool is normal, all legs are stable and weight and movement are handled well.

But let the body overload onto one or two "legs", and you trigger injury and muscle spasms and locked posture! Oh boy!! Then muscles are reacting and can't help themselves, but they do hurt!

To help this mess, you must let it recover, but not just by time. You need to reset the weight balance back on all three legs of the stool. That way the nerves and muscles work well, and NOTHING gets or stays pinched or irritated.

I call this procedure or therapeutic homework the "unloading" exercise. It is done by the person in pain, right away...often with immediate feelings of improvement.

So it dawned on me...since I already publish on the world wide web, why not make this useful, effective exercise available to everyone who would like it?!
